Notes for Phoebe Gray:

In the 1901 census Phoebe is aged 11mths and is living with her family at 103 Wandsworth Rd. Phoebe became Orphaned in 1908 and was admitted to Barnados on the 14th Aug 1911. The following is an extract from a letter from Barnados obtained in 1990 by Les Gray (Son of Jim Gray Phoebe's brother). When phoebe grey was admitted to Barnados on 4th August 1908 it was recorded that she was born on 20th August 1899. On admission it was stated that Phoebe was an Orphan and she came into Barnados from the care of the Guardians of Lambeth Union (Workhouse), Her two Sisters Elizabeth and Ellen remained in the care of the Guardians, It was stated that her Brother Charles (Samson Charles Gray) lived at South Lambeth. Phoebe was brought to our Girls Village Home, here at Barkinside where she stayed in Clarellen Cottage. The Office from which I write this letter is situated on the site of the Girls Village Home and some of the original cottages still remain. It is recorded that shortly before Phoebe went to Canada on 19th September 1911,her brother James, a soldier in the Hussars visited her at the Girls Village Home. He was shortly to leave for India and had no objection to Phoebe's emigration to Canada. On the 14th September 1911Phoebe's Grandmother, Mrs. Ellen Gray of Luscombe Street, Wandworth Road South West London, sent a postcard confirming that Phoebe had been born on 11th April 1900. This date, of course differs from that stated when Phoebe was originally admitted. Also Phoebe's surname was spelt Grey on admission but subsequently changed to Gray in the records. Unfortunately the names of the Girls parents were not recorded nor when or how the children lost their parents. On the 23rd September 1911, Phoebe sailed to Canada aboard the S.S Corinthian arriving on the 10th October 1911 at Quebec. On arrival in Canada, Phoebe was placed with a foster family, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvenus Ray, at Little Britain Ontario, who were farmers. However Phoebe did not settle well and was returned to the Margaret Cox Home for Girls at Peter borough, Ontario, which was the Barnados home for Girls in Canada. She was then placed with Mrs. Margaret Leadley at Cookstown on 5th February 1912 but unfortunately caught Scarlet Fever and on the 23rd April 1912 she came back to the Margaret Cox home for a period of convalescence. It is recorded that Phoebe had three more moves in quick succession but was eventually settled in with Mrs. John Pinkham at Little Britain, on 19th December 1912. In July 1913 when a Barnados worker called to see her in her home, Phoebe was said to be in good health and was attending School, Sunday School and Church and Mrs. Pinkham said she was the best girl she had ever had. In July 1914 Phoebe was placed with Mr. and Mrs. John Medland at Little Britain to take wages but this job did not work out and in August 1914 she went to Mrs. James Batemen at Tweed Ontario where she was said to be happy and kindly treated by all. In May 1915, Phoebe went to work for Mrs. Coulsdon at Shanty Bay, but this job did not last long as Mrs. Coulsdon said she did not need her help anymore. Then in Feb 1916 Phoebe went to work for Mrs, John Lang at Coburg where she was to stay for the next ten years and in fact until she was married. During her time with the Lang Family, it is recorded that Phoebe was on very good terms with her employer, Miss Ada Lang and she was a sensible, practical; girl. The records are not clear who Mrs. John Lang was. It was recorded that Miss Ada Lang had a brother but his name is not stated. It is recorded that Phoebe married Reg Cornish on 28th November 1926.

vii. ELIZABETH ANNA GRAY was born on 11 Jul 1901 in Lambeth. She married Norman Ernest Yeo on 28 Apr 1928 in Ontario Canada.

Notes for Elizabeth Anna Gray:

Elizabeth was born 11th July 1901. In June 1908 her Mother died and the following month july her Father passed away in the workhouse infirmary. Elizabeth was 7 yrs old. The family were not in a situation to look after her or her brothers and sisters and so Elizabeth, Sister Phoebe, Sister Ellen and Brother James were taken into care by the Lambeth Union Guardians (Workhouse), When Elizabeth was 11 years old she was transfered, from the Lambeth Union, as an Orphan to Barnados. The following is an extract from a Letter obtained from Banados by Les Gray son of James Gray who was Elizabeth's brother. Elizabeth came into Barnado's about a year later than Phoebe on 17th July 1912 and it was recorded that she was an orphan and her sister Ellen remained in the care of the Lambeth Guardians. Her date of bith was given as 11th July 1901. Elizabeth was brought to our Girls Village Home here at Barkinside and she stayed in Ilex Cottage. Shortly before she emigrated to Canada her aunt Mrs. Banbury ( Tamson Charlotte Gray) of Luscombe St, Wandsworth South London, visited her here. She asked if Barnadoe's would make sure that Elizabeth and Phoebe wrote to their Grandmother. Elizabeth sailed to Canada on 19th September 1912 aboard the S.S.Sicilian arriving in Quebec on 30th September 1912. On arrival in Canada Elizabeth was placed on 4th October 1912 with a foster mother, Mrs. Richard Blyth of Myrtle Station Ontario, where she stayed untill she was old enough to earn wages. While there Elizabeth was said to be good and getting on nicely, attending school, Sunday School, and church. On 24th September 1914 lizabeth was placed with Mrs. Clarke R. Miller at Sarnia where she was well liked and happy Elizabeth moved twice with this family to Hobart in April 1915 and then to Vasey in June 1916 Elizabeth changed her job in August 1916 and went to work for Mrs. Stanley Crozall at Uxbridge, Ontario staying for about two years. In September 1918 she went to Mrs. Arthur Gilroy at Myrtle Station and in June 1919 to Mrs. Norman Fair, Mrs. Gilroys Sister at Uxbridge, to help out during a period of sickness there. Elizabeth then returned to Mrs. Gilroy in February 1920. In March 1922 Elizabeth went to work for Mrs, Dryden at Maple Leaf Farm, Brooklin, eventually taking a job later that year with Mr and Mrs. Lundy at Port Perry where she was very happy. By this time, of course Elizabeth was 21
