Notes for WYNDHAM PHILIP GRAY:

Wyndham was born 0n the 22nd of May 1913 at 169 Wandsworth Rd. Stockwell Lambeth Surrey. He went to the South Lambeth Rd. School for boys and left in July 1927 aged 14. He went to work on the Railway at Nine Elms Depot Battersea until he became of full age when he was told to move on. This was to avoid paying him a mans wage. He then worked as a Timber porter and took any other job that came along until after his marriage this was during the economic depression and work was almost impossible to find. Wyndham would take a days work here and there wherever he could find it, sometimes unloading coal barges for the power station or whatever came along.Times were very hard in these days and money very short Wyndam never forgot those days and was never out of work for the rest of his working days. His wife Vera then managed to get him a Job at the factory where she was working( Morgan Crucible Company which later became Morganite Carbon) where he stayed for 40 years until he was made redundant. This was due to the Factory (Which was next to Battersea Bridge) relocating in Swansea after being made redundant aged 60 Wyndham still found work in various places and carried on working until his late 70s. Wyndham was always known by his second name Philip to his own family . His Father Samson Charles was always known by his second name Charles which became Charlie to his work mates. When Wyndham started work on the Railway with his father he became known as little Charlie and this was the name that Vera knew him by when she met him. After that he was known as Charlie Gray to everybody except his own family who continued to call him Phil. When Wyndham married in 1936 He lived with Vera at 46 Este Rd Battersea. They later moved to a flat in 7 Ashness Rd. Battersea in July 1936 at a rent of 18 Shillings a week and then to 15 Berber Rd Battersea SW11 in February 1939 where they had the Ground floor flat and Vera's Mother Ada Taylor Had the upstairs flat. The rent for the whole house was 2 pounds a week which was split between Vera and Charlie and vera's Mother. They rented the house for many years and after Wyndam was made redundant it became available for sale in 1972 and they bought it for £3600 In 1975 They sold it for £17000 and moved to 197 West Barnes lane Motspur park New Malden Surrey which they purchased for £13000 and completely cleared their Mortgage. Wyndham and Vera continued to live at this address until his death on January 14th 2001. In 1965 although reluctant Wyndham and Vera experienced their first ever trip abroad, they went with son Michael and his wife Sylvia to Tossa de Mar in Spain for two weeks Wyndham enjoyed this holiday so much that they went every year after that. Later they tried Crete and Turkey and they always looked forward to their annual trip abroad.

Wyndham was born during the reign of King George V, a year before the outbreak of the 1st world war. His Father Samson was stationed in Palestine during the war but Wyndham was only 5 when it ended so he would not have remembered much about it. When George V died King Edward V111 inherited the throne in 1936 when Wyndham was 23 yrs old so he would have experienced the Abdication Crisis at the time and the Coronation of King George V1. When world war 2 started in 1939 Wyndham was 26 but as he was working in a reserved occupation at the Morgans Factory in Battersea church Rd. he was not called up but he was in the Home Guard and went off in the evening to patrol or guard various places. In 1952 King George the V1 died and Wyndham experienced another Coronation that of Queen Elizabeth 11. Along with all the celebrations and street parties.

Notes for VERA DORIS ANNIE TAYLOR:

Vera was born on the 2nd November 1914 at 264 Staines Rd. Hounslow Middx. And soon after moved with her mother to Ethelburger St Battersea. Later they moved to 2 Pearson St. Battersea (Later Batton St.) At the age of 5 she started school at Shillington Street school Battersea where she stayed through Infants Juniors and senior school until she left to start work in 1928 aged 14. The school had its own cookery and its own laundry where the girls were taught domestic subjects. The playground of the school was on the roof and also at that time a school for blind children was also attached and vera's mother Ada would sometimes collect some of the local blind children from home and take them to school

At 14 Vera had passed a Scholarship to go to a Trade school and desperately wanted to go to learn hairdressing but her mother could not afford to send her and so she had to start work at 14 at the Sycamore Laundry at Clapham. Vera remembers that her starting wage was 10 shillings per week (50Pence) of which she had to hand over 9 shillings (45pence) to her mother for her board and keep and had 1 shilling ( 5 Pence) for herself. In her first few years at work Vera had many jobs, Always moving on for more money. She worked at Cleeves Toffee Factory, A Custard and Mustard factory in Park gate Rd. Battersea. Chelsea Liqueurs factory, Nestles sweet factory in Battersea and even tried going into service working as a scullery maid in a large house. This only lasted 2 weeks as she was made to pay for breakages out of her wages and so did not have any to collect, and so she left. during her time in service she was very naive and was shown the dumb waiter and told to send up the meals for the family in it. Vera not having seen one before got in it with all the plates of food all hunched up and sent herself and the food up in the tiny lift arriving in the dining room much to the amazement of the family and guests.Eventually vera got a job at the Morgan Crucible Company in Battersea church Rd. where she was earning 15shillings a week ( 75pence and later went on a machine making carbon rings where she was on piecework and could earn a.little more.. She later became a charge hand and was therefor able to put in a good word for her Husband and get him a job there as well.

Marriage Notes for MICHAEL GRAY and SYLVIA TETLOW:

Michael & Sylvia were married on the 15th August 1964 at St. Barnabus Church Clapham common. The best man was Michaels friend Bob Furlong and the bridesmaids were all cousins Pauline Mead (Michaels cousin) Pauline & June Bissett, Barbara & Sandra Kisby & Margaret Wallace, all Syvia's cousins. The wedding cars were two American Cadillacs. Sylvia and the bridesmaids went to the church from her house 13 Keildon Rd. Michael made his way from his house at 15 Berber Rd. The reception was held in a function room above the Cornet of Horse Public house in Lavender Hill not far from the church. The reception was a sit down meal provided by the function room caterers and afterwards there was a live band and the drinks were supplied over the bar. Although £150 had been paid for the drinks in advance this soon ran out despite being quite a large amount of money at that time and a further £50 was paid. This also ran out and the guests then had to buy their own (Boozy Lot). At the end of the evening the best man took Michael & Sylvia to the St Pancras Hotel where they were staying the night so as to catch a coach, from the coach station early the next morning, to go to the airport for a two week honeymoon in Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava, Spain. The night in the Hotel was a wedding present from Sylvia's boss at the National union of Seamans Office at Maritime House Clapham where she worked as a secretary to the general secretary of the Union. This was the first time either of them had flown so it was quite an experience. They landed at Gerona Airport and were taken by coach to their Hotel (The Mare Nostrum) in Tossa. They had a very enjoyable holiday and returned home a fortnight later to start married life in 1 room of the upstairs flat of Syvia's Grandmothers house at 13 Keildon Rd Battersea for which they paid £1 a week rent . After a short while the remainder of the upstairs flat became available as the lodger moved out and they then had 3 rooms a toilet and the share of the bathroom and the rent was then £3. After the birth of Nicola and Michael they bought their first house at 39 Ashness Rd. Battersea for £6200 and in 1975 sold it for £15,750 and moved to 174 Claremont Avenue Motspur Park New Malden Surrey which was bought for £15,000. In 1989 Michael and Sylvia celebrated their Silver wedding anniversary and a suprise party was organized for them by Nicola and the family at Holy Cross Church Hall Motspur Park. At the time of writing this in the year 2002 Michael & Sylvia have been married for 38 years
